Life

As if there haven’t been so many signs in the past month of sentiment and of bittersweet, a family from home has suddenly lost their father to a heart attack. A father who was rigorously healthy and active. These sisters are some of the most intelligent, free-spirited and kind girls I have ever met, and that can be attributed to a father’s influence. They are patient, passionate and beautiful, and I cannot imagine how they must be feeling. I have lost touch these years, but I know where they are. I can only hope they know that we are here thinking of them. RIP.

Mad Men

I’ve watched all 4 seasons of Mad Men in roughly 2.5 weeks so that I could catch up on the current season that premiered about a month ago. Is this completely disgusting or is this just the type of commitment I’m going for these days? I kind of like it.

So This is Goodbye (Pink Ganter remix) - William Fitzsimmons

I can’t get over this.

Days Like These

Out of nowhere, having a class on diversity today really opened up the first year students to talking about their experiences.  From racial identity to religion to familial background, they were all so eager to share what it is like to be Latina, or Muslim, or to have lost a parent.  For a class so reluctant to speak in general and to discuss previously serious topics, it was a pleasure to see such candid discussion about their home lives and about their view on stereotypes.

Today spoke even deeper on the persistence of assumptions.  Combining my week with Habitat to my friends’ recent losses to my students opening up about themselves demonstrates just how important it is to not only listen to everyone’s stories but also to continuously ask questions and to hear others’ stories.  The toughest guy on the construction crew down in Palm Beach?  He lost a son at age 21 in a motorcycle accident and is a damn good baker; he works with students because we keep the memory of his late son alive.  The co-facilitator I work with?  He is losing his older brother to a battle with cancer; a brother who has been a father-figure to him after he lost his real father at age 9.  The student who is so appreciative to be at Bentley and does not complain among others who do?  His parents not only didn’t go to college, but also didn’t even graduate high school; he feels so fortunate to attend class and to be a part of the college lifestyle.

We think we know so much about the people around us: our neighbors, our classmates, our peers at work; yet, we know so little and will continue to know little unless we are curious and crave understanding.  My perceptions of others has changed greatly over the past few weeks and my breath has been taken away on multiple occasions.  I can’t say I know how I’m going to, but all I know is I want to spend the greater part of my life listening and giving back to others.
